Throughout decades studies are going on health benefits of Garlic by many herbalists all over the world.  Garlic! Shape like a bulb, white in color; it is a relative of onion. In addition to a food ingredient garlic is also an effective medicine for many diseases. This was discovered many years ago.

The Story of Garlic

Garlic is derived from the word  “garleac” ; {gar means spear & leek [a vegetable related to onion]}. It is the bulb of a plant of onion family having strong taste and smell. Due to the pungent taste or smell many may not like. But if seen, there is a store of nutrition inside this ‘Little master’. So don’t waste time include garlic in your diet today itself.

Medicinal Value of Garlic

From ancient times onwards traditional healers and practitioners prescribed garlic for various ailments. Egyptians prescribed it to build physical strength; people in China used it to lower the blood pressure. But it was Louis Pasteur who first revealed the antiseptic properties of garlic which was used in World wars I & II by some of the armies. Further studies proved that it can fight bacteria, fungus, viruses and parasites. Now days it is used as a medicinal herb for treating cold, flu & various other diseases.

  • Helps lower the high blood pressure & blood cholesterol.
  • Prevents or fights certain cancers.
  • Antiviral & antibacterial properties help to prevent infections.
  • Ease the nasal congestion.

Garlic itself is a Granary of nutrition. Its nutritional value can’t be ignored. It contains many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients which are very essential for our body. This flavoring agent also enhances our immunity power.

Manganese

Manganese is a mineral present in garlic is  essential for the proper functioning of the body. It helps our body to form connective tissues, bones, blood clotting factors etc. It is also essential for calcium absorption, blood sugar regulation etc. Manganese also improves normal brain and nerve function.

Selenium

It is a nutrient essential for  healthy mind and healthy body. Its an antioxidant which helps boost immunity and reduce stress and strains. Selenium facilitates thyroid gland to function properly. It protects the cells from damage and infection. Consuming garlic daily increases the resistance power of our body.

Vitamin C

We all know the significance of vitamin C in this current situation. It is necessary to consume more of this nutrient to improve our immunity and proper functioning of immune system. Garlic has plentiful of vitamin C. It is needed for repair of tissues. It also helps in iron absorption in our body. Vitamin C also improves our body’s capacity to fight diseases.

Vitamin B6

Another nutrient in garlic is vitamin B6. It is a water soluble nutrient which is very vital for our body. Vitamin B6 helps brain development, keeps nervous system and immune system healthy. It also manages the mood and reduces depression. This nutrient aids in the formation of red blood cells in our body. As our body cannot produce vitamin B6 we acquire it from foods and supplements. 

Phosphorous

Garlic contains a good amount of phosphorous. Phosphorous is essential for healthy teeth and gum. It plays important role in the production of protein for growth and development of our body. A right amount of phosphorous is also needed for the body organs like kidney, heart, nervous system etc. to operate normally.

Calcium

Calcium is a mineral which is very necessary for life. It is essential to build strong bones and teeth. Calcium is also needed for the proper functioning of organs like heart, muscles etc. If our bones is not strong enough our body has to face many problems like hassle in performing various tasks, weakness in the body etc. It also could be the root cause for several other diseases. Calcium along with Vitamin D fights against certain cancers, diabetes and also blood pressure. So eating garlic cloves is beneficial.

Potassium

Potassium is also a very important mineral which is vital to our body. It helps to regulate the fluid balance in the body, muscle contractions and nerve signals. It also helps reduce blood pressure, prevents stroke, osteoporosis and kidney stones. It checks wrinkles and age spots and naturally moist the skin. It promotes growth of new cells. It also heals dark spots and marks. So garlic proves to be a skin conditioner due to the presence of potassium in it. 

Garlic is really a store house of many supplements which is truly advantageous for our health. Although it is beneficial to us in many ways there are few disadvantages too.

Eating raw garlic cloves is not advisable as it leads to indigestion.

Consuming garlic also causes halitosis; chewing parsley leaves reduces this.

Intake of too much garlic is said to result in skin irritation rarely.

The benefits of garlic indicate that we should include it in our daily diet. This Little Master is really a granary of nutrition. Let’s recognize the advantages of garlic and make it a part of our lifestyle. This small vegetable-cum-herb can do many wonders.
